EUROPEANA: the Cultural Heritage Website of the European Digital Library (EDL)
LIBER was a founding member of the EDL Foundation, and it is also an active member of the EDL Thematic Network, which is developing EUROPEANA as a heavily interlinked website for giving access to Europe's cultural heritage with documents from libraries, museums, archives and audiovisual media. Please have a look at the demonstration site, where you may also give your personal reactions through participation in a survey.
You may even win an iPhone if you complete the survey!
More details about EUROPEANA and the European Digital Library project will be given during the 2008 Annual General Conference in Istanbul.
European Cultural Heritage: Numeric Study
Following the research on the digitization of European cultural heritage
carried out by Numeric in 2007, the results of the research can now be consulted
at www.numeric.ws.
A workshop is being held in Luxembourg in early April 2008 in order to consult interested parties,
and to agree the recommended methods for collecting statistics in each
country. Until now statistical data have been available mainly for national libraries only,
and that there is an urgent need of more data from the university libraries.
The proposed approach will make best use of standing surveys undertaken
by various Ministries and Professional Associations with the intention
of minimising the survey burden on individual institutions. However, it
will be necessary to supplement the data so collected by a limited
sample survey of institutions in each country, conducted by the Numeric
Study Team. Further information may be found in the Numeric report at
www.numeric.ws.
The workshop has good representation across all the types of cultural
institution and experts from all countries will be participating. The
study team is anxious to ensure that the views of LIBER are properly
considered and will continue to liaise with LIBER to this end.
